It occurred to me the other day that posting thread after thread of my gamerips was not the best way to go about things. I do so many rips that it just clogs up the forum. So, I felt that the best way to go about things would be to have a single, central thread for me to put all of my rips in.

At least it will make it easier for when people ask me where to find all of my gamerips!

This was a hell of hard work. Extracting the files from the game files was easy, since someone had made an extraction tool for that very purpose. But no one made a tool to automatically title and number the 230+ .OGG files. That was the hard part.

Only 115 of those files made the process. I highly doubt anyone would of had wanted to listen to 0:03 files, which most of the time were just a bunch of victory songs played when your character killed something. But even then, there was still 180 files, all of which were longer than a minute in length.

From here on I created a bunch of folders - Main Menu, folders for songs that were based off of the official soundtrack songs, etc. etc. I then spent a good couple of days organizing them best I could. From here, I went and deleted the files that were pretty much just shortened versions of the soundtrack songs. I kept "alternate" versions, such as "The Dreaming - 'Ere the World Crumbles" (Battle Variation).

Once that was done, I gave them titles and numbers, and organized them promptly.

Of course I had my setbacks. I reorganized the listing a few times, altered the placement of a few songs, etc. etc. It was a week of hard work, and I am just glad it is all over now!

As of late, it seems that whenever there is a videogame license to some big profile movie, if you want good music you don't go out to buy the soundtrack but rather rip the music from the game! It's odd how so many times now that the movie tie-ins, which are universally considered to be cheap paychecks for the publisher and developer involved, actually has the tendency to have well written music composed by those that have an actual love for their craft.

Mark Griskey is well known for his dark and meticulous style of music. His main themes are usually slow, adiago dependent pieces that gives a darkened texture on the atmosphere. You can place the main theme from both Prince Caspian and The Sith Lords side by side and you would know that it was Griskey.

Lennie Moore is most well known for being a goddamn genius and his music, regardless of if they are all synth or recorded with an orchestra, being absolutely fantastic and because of these two things he has never seen a full on commercial release and practically nobody knows that he even exists.

Now the bulk of the music was done by Griskey, while Moore was listed as having doing additional music. I would take as saying he took up the final third of the score, although since I have no official documents I can't say whom did what.

The music is great. These are both high class composers, and they had such a great chemistry here. Their music meshes together so well, it might as well have been one composer. I think that is the sign of a great artistic team - when you can sense the individual, but both of the artist's persona just connects together seamlessly. This is probably why Moore is on The Old Republic team.

There are SFX here, but once the music starts they are quickly drowned out by the music. So, by a minute in, you'll barely hear any SFX. So, don't have any worries that this soundtrack is a terrible listening expierence. That is as far from the truth as you could possibly get.

About the Music:

The score of Diablo II is as iconic as you can get. Just the same as with Mario, Zelda, and the Final Fantasy series, you know what you are hearing as soon as it plays. Diablo II has long ago become the standard of the clickfest RPGs, in both it’s game mechanics as well as it’s musical landscape.

Uelmen did not go for an orchestral score with the core game, although he did for the expansion pack “Lord of Destruction” (represented in tracks 41 through 50). He often used guitars, both steel rimmed and electric, drums and a small arrangement of flutes, with some electronica in the background to give it that “experimental” edge. For larger than life instruments, such as the organ and chorus, he used samples.

There are no motifs here, although there is plenty of them in “Lord of Destruction”. There isn’t much in the way of the narrative links. Rather, Uelmen uses the music to describe the landscape of the regions that your character fights across. Also just as interesting is the lack of any typical action pieces. The closest is probably “The Lord of Terror” and “Siege” and even then they are slow paced.

Diablo II is an interesting score to be sure, but it suffers in the way of the personal. You never really get a sense of what the characters are feeling in all this madness. Hell is invading the world; why don’t we get a musical direction in terms of how bad they have it. Uelmen says plenty of the chaos of the world, but not much of the chaos in the world. It’s unfortunate, and can mostly be blamed on the game having practically no character scenes whatsoever. It’s nearly all combat, cutscenes aside.

While we are on that topic; Uelmen did not compose the cutscenes. That was done by Blizzard regulars Glenn Stafford, Jason Hayes, and Blizzard one timer Andrea Pessino. These tracks are a great deal more orchestral in nature, and they feel grander as a result. Some of the best music in the entire score are from these cinematics. And they aren’t brief either – they average around 3 or so minutes, with the longest “The Calling” measuring at 7 minutes. Unfortunately, they are also filled with dialogue and sound effects. Still, beneath it all is great music. I apologize for this, but I am no sound engineer.

Let’s talk about Lord of Destruction for a bit, because it is an interesting side note. It is very much influenced by Wagner. None of these tracks would seem out of place in any of his Operas or Symphonic Poems. In fact, “The End with Baal” contains a direct reference to “Tristan and Isolde”. All four of the pieces have a musical reference or quote. Most obvious to those with a good ear is “Siege”. At the 2:26 mark, the opening sequence of “Mars: The Bringer of War” from Holst’s “The Universe” is quoted.

The Lord of Destruction is musically the best part of the entire soundtrack. It is the most involving, it is Uelmen at his most creative, and it is just superb in every way. It is the shortest portion, but it is by far the sweetest. It also boasts the honor of having the two cinematic pieces that are the most “silent” and easiest to listen to.

About the Rip:

Okay, so this is what I don’t get. Diablo II was released in 2000. It is one of the most recognized and loved game soundtracks ever. Practically every PC Gamer knows Diablo when they hear it. It is archived in .MPQ files, which is easy to open thanks to an easily found MPQ Editor. On top of that, the files were organized in folders saying which act they were used in! On top of THAT, they had file names that were either the same as the soundtrack release or quite clearly showed what they were used for.

So, why is it that I was the first guy to think about doing an expanded release? On the fly no less! This came about because I was bored, and I was done in fifteen to twenty minutes. Getting the cinematics, and tracking down the e3 trailers took another forty or so. This was not a hard rip people. This was easy as pie. So, why was I the first one to do this? Boggles the mind.

This was encoded from .wav files to .mp3 VBR. It was set at 128 kbps in order to preserve the original sound quality of the source; any higher would have resulted in needless necessities.

About the Music:

For all of the things that Obsidian Entertainment gets right – characters, plot, choices and consequences, merging of narrative and game mechanics, there are a few notable things that they almost get wrong. Lack of technical polish, and music. With the exception of Knights of the Old Republic II, and the two expansion packs for Neverwinter Nights 2, the music that accompanied Obsidian’s games were forgettable at best, and non-existent at worst.

Dungeon Siege III hits the ball right out of the park. The story deals with the death and resurrection of the Tenth Legion, and the soundtrack walks fine balance between requiem and heroic fanfare. Starting off with the somber “Main Theme”, we are musically introduced with slow strings and a soft, echoing chorus. The Main Theme never develops into a loud mouthpiece, never acting like a Marche, but more like a threnody. It speaks of the long, distant accomplishments of the Tenth Legion, and it gives a hint of what you – as one of the few remaining Legionnaires – will accomplish. It is not heroic, but that is not what the soundtrack aspires to be.

Even the theme of the Legion – personified in “The Rukkenvahl Chapterhouse” – has just reminiscent of heroism, instead of blasting it in loud horns and overwhelming chorus. The whole narrative deals with Death and Rebirth, and the soundtrack stays true to that idea with the “distant” feel of the music.

Oh, to be sure there is “loudness”, as is to be expected with any Fantasy score. The final boss theme, “The Corrupted Creator” is a wonderful example of how chorus can be used in a piece without overwhelming the rest of the instruments. It is empowering, adrenaline pounding, but it is also heroic and possessive of grace that is rare in a chorus piece. That applies doubly for a “final battle” theme. The same can be said of the second-to-last boss battle theme, “The Fires of Jeyne Kassynder”. There is just a near perfect balance of drums, thrusting strings and chorus. It is one of the best pieces in the entire soundtrack.

Nothing is perfect however. The high points of the soundtrack are whatever Jason Graves composed, with the worst being those written by Tim Wynn. This may fall to personal taste, but the Hans Zimmer/Media Venture inspired pieces not just feel out of place besides Graves’ orchestral pieces, but they are just plain boring. There is nothing by Wynn that you haven’t heard before in all the dozens of modern film scores. Fortunately, Graves’ music makes up the bulk of the soundtrack, with 72 of the 92 tracks.

Overall, this is a great score. Dunegon Siege III put Graves out of his element. Graves, who worked mostly in the realm of science fiction and horror, was put to the test with his first fantasy score. Thanks to his unconventionally somber approach, he came out on top.

About the Rip:

I am crazy. I am a madman, a lunatic, and I deserve to be locked up in any state funded asylum of your choice. That is the only explanation that would explain why I did this rip.

Let me explain myself. For whatever reason that escapes me, Obsidian’s sound engine decide to encode all of the music audio files – and not any of the sound effects, voiceovers, and ambience – as a random assortment of numbers. The music was given the exclusive privilege of giving you no idea what you are seeing until you double click the file and listen.

And there was 300 files when I started on this mad crusade. Two hundred and ninety-nine minutes worth of music. Great music to be sure, but I knew what I was getting myself into. A greater miracle yet was I able to come out of it with my sanity intact.

When I first got my hands on the .ogg files – and credits are due to bogol of the Final Fantasy Shrine for supplying them – I couldn’t make out even a quarter of the music. I recognized the final boss theme and the Main Theme without issue, but that rest was just a musical blur. The only way I was able to do an arranged soundtrack was for me to play the game again.

This was lessened thanks to the fact that the game is only 12 hours long. It’s not like The Witcher where I had to re-play a fifty hour game, so I suppose some things were looking in my favor.

Regardless, I will gladly tell you that finding some of these songs were atrociously hard. Blame it on me being obsessive with perfection, but I easily spent thirty minutes on finding a single song at times. And some of the times, I spent that much time looking for a song because I didn’t realize I had already numbered and named it.

With all that said, when I finally reached the game’s end I had around 12 or so files I was unable to “properly” organize. Since I refused to play through the game again just so for these 12 files, I decided to merge them or arrange them before/after with files that were “thematically similar and/or pleasing”. I didn’t so much as go for chronological integrity so much as I did with a better listening experience.

I also followed this idea with some of the files I had arranged properly but decided to move further ahead for climatic purposes. For example, “The Spire” was originally the fifth track “The Road of the Rukkenvahl”. The reason I did such a drastic change there was because it was only heard for 30 seconds at the beginning of the game before “The Burning Mansion” would cut in, and it just seemed more appropriate to have it listed as the Spire level’s theme.

Another example is “The Fires of Jeyne Kassynder”. It originally appeared several hours before hand, near the end of the Glitterdale Mines level. I moved it slightly forward so as to give it more thematic satisfaction, since it is also used when you fight Jeyne Kassynder. That file is also three different files merged together; the first two are major revisions of each other, the first being longer and more instrument heavy with the second being shorter and more chorus dependant. The last part is a short :23 piece that is all naked chorus. I put that there for a better conclusion to an already epic battle theme.

Many other files were merged due to the fact that they were very similar. They were essentially the same piece with added layers. Take note of this when you listen to “Gunderic Manor / The Dead Rise” and you will see what I mean. I merged these files for a better listening experience. Otherwise you would have had four files, one immediately following the next, with just different additions in instruments. I felt this was the better solution.

About the Music:

"So how was the game Duke? Was *it* any good?"

"After 12 fucking years it should be!"

Ain't that truth, although the truth of the matter it has been fifteen years since the last Duke Nukem game. It has been a long time, and it is somewhat surprising how the game's name could work so well with the development hell of development hells. As the sons of the director, George Rousard put it; "Duke Nukem *Taking* Forever".

Now that we have it in our hands - with flying pigs, a wailing fat lady and a frozen hell in the background - what do we say about Duke Nukem Forever?

It's alright. It's fun, but nothing else. This is a game with an almost mythical background amongst gaming lore. It had to be the perfect game, the next revolution. When game historians document the history of First-Person-Shooters, the game changers would be Doom, Half-Life, Halo and Duke Nukem Forever. It had to be. Anything less would have been a major disappointment, the greatest anticlimax since the opening of Al Capone's Vault. Unfortunately, that is exactly what has happened. Forever is a decent game, a nice throwback to the early 90's style of FPS, but clobbered with pacing issues and needless puzzles.

How about the music? Well, the same result. It has a fair balance of outright boring tracks and those that are fun to listen to. No one is going into Forever expecting any sort of intelligence with the music, but there is nothing but action themes. Each piece is louder than the last, and never do our ears get a chance to relax. The pieces that could closely resemble a character's theme is Duke's theme from Duke Nukem 3d, and that is a half dozen unimaginative rehashes.

The music and the game compliment each other perfectly: they are decent, not great, and fail to meet expectations.

About the rip:

OrangeC will probably have more to say here than myself, since I didn’t rip the music. Instead of using the PC game, which has .mp3s at 192 kbps, he used the PS3 version and encoded those files at .mp4 399kbps. I simply used what he provided and arranged and numbered them. My job was made easier by the fact that the files had names, unlike the random assortment of numbers and letters as is custom of most console games.

About the Music:

The thing about great music is that it has a tendency to come from the unlikeliest of places. In the day and age of synthesized orchestra, it is becoming more and more probable for you to find great music with the “underdogs”.

When I downloaded Jamestown, I was not expecting a great orchestral score. Sure, it is done by synth, but the philosophy of orchestral music is there. Despite how the gameplay gives allusion to the old school SHMUP game mechanics, the music is definitely theatrical in nature. Every song is superbly written – especially the final level and boss themes.

Allow me to single out these specific tracks, “The Lost Temple of Croatoa” and “The Heart of Mars”. These two are great examples of how to do a chorus right. It is so easy, especially in this day and age, to think that so long as chorus is loud and done in unison with percussion that it is good. But here, the chorus is not necessarily loud so much as dominant, and it is not going on constant throughout either of the tracks. All of the instruments – the percussion, the strings, and woodwinds – are given their time to shine. And they work together so seamlessly, so well. These two tracks are fantastic. I’ll go out of the way to say that even if these two tracks were the only good tracks in the entire score – which is not the case – they would be worth the download by themselves.

“The Journey Through the Dark Sector” is another great piece. In that level the player is leaving the domain of the English and penetrating enemy territory, and in there they unravel a dark secret of Mars. The track displays tension and a foreboding sense that works just as well in game as it does outside it.

I don’t know where Francisco Cerda came from, but I hope he stays in the video game music scene. The world deserves to hear more great music from him.

About the Rip:

Credits go to Diablo1123 of the Jamestown sub-forum on the Steam forums for writing out the program I used to extract the music files.

The files were encoded in .ogg. I used dbPowerAmp, set at VBR 320kbps -0 to convert them to .mp3. After that it was a mixture of memory and quick glances at YouTube videos to proprerly arrange the files into a chronological soundtrack. Some of the files were used twice for the after level cutscenes - "A New World" and "Virginia Dare" in particular. Also, "Boss Battle" is used for every end level boss battle, excluding the second stage of the Conquistador battle, which then "The Heart of Mars" is played.

Now, here is a score that by now needs no introduction. Brown's work on Lineage II is pure pulpy bliss. It does not reach the depth of some of the greater fantasy works - like Conan the Barbarian, Shore's Lord of the Rings, or most recently the fantastic Skyward Sword. However, it is fun, each track is well written, and it is bombastic to it's very core. It may not be brilliant nor genius, but it is great stuff for those that want a purely orchestral experience.

After doing the music for all of the major updates, it only seemed natural that I went the next thing and did the expansions. Again, as should be expected from me now, this is a "high quality" rip in terms of presentation. You get two different album covers to choose from, the files have been edited and merged to remove silent spots, and they have all been named and ordered in a "chronological" order.

Well, perhaps chronological is not the best of terms. As this is an MMO, and there are several ways that people will progress from area to area as they level, that is probably not the best word to use here. What I did was start off with the starting zones for the new races that were added - the Blood Elves and the Draenei. From there we go to the first Outland zone: the Hellfire Peninsula. One of the final quests in that zone has you fly to the major city in Outland, Shattrath. Now, the zone that Shattrath is in - Tellredor Forest - is a few levels higher than Zangramash. However, I placed the music from Tellredor before Zangramash because you technically go through Tellredor before reaching Zangramash.

From there, I just went up - from Zangramash to The Blade's Edge Mountains to Netherstorm. We then go to the final zone of Shadowmoon Valley, which is way at the bottom of Outland.

After finishing up Outland, we go into the three Caverns of Time instances - Escape from Durnholde Keep, The Opening of the Dark Portal, and The Battle for Hyjal - and finish up with the Karazhan instance.

So, with all that said...what about the music itself? Well, with so many composers, the expansion pack touches a lot of musical ground. That is also it's biggest weakness - the music goes all over the place in terms of style, and it doesn't have much solid footing because of it. I mean, with one track you could be hearing something orchestral in nature and then hear one of Uelmen's ambient tracks.

I also feel that this is one of the weaker outings. Despite coming under new leadership, the Blizzard sound team was still very firmly in their roots. The music overall doesn't hold much of a punch - it is very much a part of the landscape, but it never takes your attention from the game itself. Many composers would say a good score is one that is invisible, and that is definitely felt with this one. The next expansion packs - and definitely Cataclysm - you see the music start to become more and more dominant, and you can see the roots taken hold here. The music is leaps above what was done with World of Warcraft, but it is not quite thematic yet and thus weaker as a result.

Coming away from The Burning Crusade, Blizzard Entertainment knew that it had to one up it's efforts from before. World of Warcraft was no less a success back then that it is today, and with nine million subscribers they had ample pressure on their shoulders. The Burning Crusade had it's players travel beyond Azeroth: with Wrath of the Lich King, players were returned to Azeoroth, albeit the icy northern realm of the Lich King. Arthas, the traitor of Lordaeron, and below the Burning Legion the "big bad" of Azeroth. For him, everything was about to come full circle. Throughout the game the developers had the players go through many of the things that Arthas himself went through when he first came to Northrend. It was a twisted reflection, and within his frozen citadel of Icecrown Arthas saw it as a way to create his most powerful servants and ensure his conquest of the world. The entire time, you are under the gaze of the Lich King. From the moment you enter Valliance Keep or Valgarde you are under attack from the Lich King's minions. The game wastes no time in acquainting you with the titular villain: many quests have you interacting with him on some scale.

Wrath of the Lich King is a noticabley darker score because of this. The Main Menu theme is no less bombastic than it's predeccesors, beginning with a striking of bells that gives it a very cold, icy tone. The theme exhibited plenty of chorus, loud brass and driving strings, but it feels noticeably darker and ominous than the previous Main Themes. Even from the Main Menu the game lets you know that you are no way safe. With some few exceptions, the entire soundtrack is some of the darkest that the Warcraft series has ever ventured into.

After the Main Theme we enter the Death Knight starting zone with "Arise a 'Dark' Knight". Once a hero of the Alliance or the Horde, the Lich King raises the player up to be one of his most feared servants - the Death Knight. We hear some of the Death Knight theme, which was first heard in the opening cinematic "Arthas, My Son". A display of long, brooding strings opens up the piece, with low chorus that hints at the tragedy yet to come ends it. The whole of the Death Knight zone feels like a twisted requiem: instead of mourning death, it celebrates it. When you descend on the Scarlet loyal village of Heavenshire, the music does not play it like a tragedy. It is a dark victory for a dark lord.

Assault on New Avalon is when the Death Knight zone is most typical. Fast strings, loud percussion, use of dominating chorus. It is all in place within a fantasy videogame. Of course, it is well written and rousing, but it almost feels out of place with the rest of the music. Perhaps if the strings were more "plucked" as you would hear in many Penderecki symphonies, or if the theme was just slower and more somber it wouldn't be so jarring. I have included the Album version of this theme, since the two vary in so many ways.

Skipping to the better part of Northrend, we find a wide range of styles used. Orchestra with synth is the main style here, but we also find a good deal of ambiance and electronica ("The Nexus" is a good example). Personally speaking, this is just as jarring as it was in the Burning Crusade (although less so since there are fewer ambient and electronica tracks here). Unlike the orchestral tracks, these don't really say much of anything. They feel more like filler than musically describing the scene. This is a common problem throughout the World of Warcraft series. Plenty of good tracks divided with filler.

And that's the problem here. For every 3 or 4 great piece of music we have 2 or 3 filler. There is more good than bad here, but there is more than a share of bad for us not to notice.

World of Warcraft Update Music Collection

Often times when people post music from World of Warcraft it is the released soundtracks. However, the problem here is these are often incomplete since whenever the game gets a major update more music is added. On the other hand, when people post the "complete" soundtracks for each expansion pack, it is an unorganized mess, with the only sort of organization being the sometimes very vague filenames.

You will get neither here. As is expected of the rest of my gamerips, I will organize each new set of music into a coherent soundtrack, with album names you would expect in a commercial release, as well as my high quality covers.
