Jerry Goldsmith & Joel Goldsmith
Star Trek: First Contact
“phoenix edition” (resurrected and restored)

The bootleg material floating around the 'net suffered from clipped dynamic range and some other sound anomalies. It included the previously released official album material but it also inherited its errors: digital pops (even in songs).

For this release, the original album material was re-incorporated, so dynamic range could be retained. Audio errors were meticulously repaired. The remaining bootleg portion was adjusted in volume because of differences due to mentioned clipped dynamic range. “Stimulation” was restored by SonicAdventure.

“Magic Carpet Ride” by Steppenwolf was taken from the remastered 1999 edition of their 1968 album “The Second”.

For the official soundtrack album selection (minus “Oobie Doobie”) use the playlist /album.m3u.

Thanks for this. May I ask what you changed? And where did you get lossless tracks for the bootleg tracks? To my existence none exist though the frequency response of the bootleg tracks on your version looks pristine, Im astonished.

If Im allowed just a tiny bit of criticism: some bootleg tracks are too loud, especially soft tracks. And did you change the overall EQ? I may be mistaken but is there more bass on your version? I havent heard the official version for a long time so I could be wrong there...

All the changes that really matter are described in the opening post.
The lossless bootleg is around in Monkey's Audio format in a ST soundtrack collection torrent or standalone as FLAC. But only the superior 1CD version. To my knowledge, the 2CD version with all the alternates is only available as MP3 or AAC and some of them incorporate inferior material with even more sound anomalies and even SFX. I guess no-one knows the original quality of that one for sure. Maybe even 128 kbps MP3. :(

All the lossless versions are the same except for codec. And they're all messed-up. The tracks are divided too early (for example the "End Credits" start for 2 seconds in the track "First Contact"), so step one was to combine them and divide them again. Then the official album tracks could be re-added. But the thing that hurted the most was lost dynamic range in the boot material.

I didn't use an EQ on this one - only changes in volume were made. Maybe your setup changed. :)
The problem with the loudness differences was the hardest one for me. (The maker of the bootleg even amplified album material: for example, "Welcome Aboard" was way too loud.)
I spent days listening over headphones and speakers with a fixed volume knob. I may have fiddled around some days more but you always have to keep in mind that if you lose volume you lose information (s/n ratio). (Dynamic's always a compromise. If you're not sitting in a concert hall, the soft passages must be hearable to some degree but still be distinguishable from the loud ones ...) I think we would gladly appreciate it if you have additional suggestions for volume changes. We can always add them via replay-gain! :)

Ah, ok, I didnt know that. Ive never encountered a lossless version before and Im very glad that youve found and used it.

Loudness differences are always the biggest problem if someone fucked them up before. I can imagine what you had to work with: soft tracks were probably way too loud. You mentionend ReplayGain, well, this is the source of the problem because replaygain takes the overall loudness into account but also uses the loudest dynamic peaks. Meaning: a soft tracks that stays low in volume over the course of the whole tracks will be amplified - gone is the natural loudness of the orchestra. On the other hand a track that is really low in overall volume but has only ONE dynamic peak (like a cymbal crash or a timpani hit) will stay low in volume even if replay gain would "like" to amplify the volume. So using replaygain on your version would make matters worse again.

Furthermore, theres also the slight possibility that the bootleg tracks have a different frequency response which also could lead to an impression of higher loudness while in reality its only some frequencies responsible for this. In my experience, many Goldsmith scores are sounding different in their original recording session form compared to the officially released CD version.

If you like, I could try my hand at this score using your version. I have been wanting to do this for a long time but never felt that it was worth it since I only had lossy sources available. With your version it would be different.

I don't use replay-gain that way, of course. :)
What I wanted to suggest, is: you name some values for certain tracks (like "first contact": -1,5) and one can apply them to the tracks manually (via "edit replay-gain tags" in foobar for example). The result (to the ear at least) is like adjusted volume in a sound editor but without losing data. one can always play back one track in its original volume again. (The requirement for all this of course is a replay-gain capable player.)

And: yup. the different sources sound slightly different in this release. One more reason I tried to be careful with changing levels.

So, Sinus, all of the score is here? The Boot stuff NOT here is just alts and stuff?

I will post the volume changes when Ive edited or "remastered" a version for myself ;)

Right ...
The original material I used also had "Assimilation 2" (or "Borg Montage 2") (~1:03) which seems to be Joel's version. This one had faulty audio which I repaired to some degree, but it was essentially a softer, more ambient version of that piece with nothing new to offer. Instead it felt just like playing the track "Assimilation" once again, especially due to its similar ending. I took out that track deliberately. But just that one!

There are some additional tracks like "First Sign of Borg" (lame) or "The Gift Of Flesh" (quite great) but they're only available in lossy quality and they seem to stem from some inferior tape source (The 2CD version). Had a great conversation with Doctor Go about these tracks - thanks for that! So, if someone wants to add them to their collection, they've been posted in faux lossless quality some days ago but I couldn't integrate them. For my approach is "quality over quantity".

I'm very impressed with this. The sound is rich and full for all the tracks. To me, the volume levels sound right--funny how that can be so subjective sometimes. Excellent work.

It's not so subjective. The recordings have a "real" volume. If you render it too low, it loses dynamic (like some old CDs...); if you render it too loud, it loses dynamic too (like a lot new CDs)... And you can expand that to all the gamut of frequencies I think. The closer you are of the recording engineer intent, the best it is. ;)

(this may seem like an ongoing remix battle but it isn't. :) )

- updated my version with a restored (and finally listenable) version of "Stimulation" thanks to SonicAdventure!
- also adjusted the volume levels inspired by SonicAdventure's edition.

This version is my final word. :)

Well, I was able to download and play "Firebird" okay, it unzipped with the password, but only after I clipped and pasted the password! Could not download "Resistance" at all, "Upload.to" would not allow me to enter the proper "Capta" phrase, even tried case sensitive letters, and the site kept trying to download a smaller file into my computer, seemed like spyware or spam of some sort. I would not use that site anymore, try Rapidshare, Multiupload, or Megaupload, they are the best. And try to stay away from passwords and "Capta" codes, if at all possible, they only cause problems.
