I finally got Track 18 from CD1 repaired.. had to bake the darn file for about 30 minutes to eat through 222 re-ripped frames. She should be good as new now. I've also included it in the OP.

This is not a re-up of your rip, I have more integrity than that. I only thought to listen after I saw the issue reported in your thread, so I took a listen to track 18 on my rip, and sure enough the distortion was present there too, even in the original wav file before conversion to mp3. I'm questioning the quality of the physical discs at this point.

Hi Ghost, you're very welcome. Track 18 was the only one reported to have a problem (it was just a quick half-second or so of distortion), more to do with the quality of the disc itself I think, if their shipment packaging is any indication. It happened to some other people as well. I've listened to most of it in my car and on PC off and on, and everything sounds great. No one has posted a complaint so far, so looks like that one track was the only issue.

Thanks very much for this. I haven't listened carefully through the entire soundtrack, but there might still be a few minor distortions here and there. For instance, check 27:21 on Skyrim Atmospheres. The FLAC rip of the soundtrack has the same distortion on the track, so it might just be a problem with the original recording. Anyway, such minor problems are probably not worth the effort to fix (and I plan to just re-rip my own copy when I get it in a few days).

In any case, thanks for the awesome upload!

Yeah, bit lazy of me to ask that when I immediately listened to the entire thing after I'd finished downloading it! I found no other faulty tracks on there, they were immaculate! It's an amazing soundtrack, but it definitely has more of an impact when you're immersed into the game rather than when you listen to it solo. I was thinking about getting it myself (and I mean no disrespect to you by saying this) but I'm glad I didn't buy it because only a handful of tracks that I loved from the game that really stand out as great, singly. Each to their own obviously, and again, I'm really appreciative of your upload, mate. Blood and Steel gets me fired up every time!

Also, I'm pretty sure it was the disc; that happens to me so much when I rip songs from CDs; some of them, much to my annoyance, end up distorted or with a "scratchy" effect. I wouldn't have the know-how you do to repair them though, probably should try and dedicate some time to that!

The Atmospheres track sounds fine to me. If you listen with headphones, you might notice some "gaps" or something. I'm pretty sure this is an editing "thing" and not a disc error.

Ah well, it's just an incredibly minor gap and probably is, as you say, from the editing (though it does break the continuity of a lot of the effects when it occurs). And you're right, I mostly notice it on headphones. It's too bad though, once you notice gaps you ALWAYS notice them :/ Still, a wonderful soundtrack on the whole - even the Atmospheres track is excellent!

I can understand not wanting to buy it, there isn't a shortage of people who think $30.00 is excessive for the soundtrack. Considering the quality and duration of it however, I think it was worth paying. The main reason I bought it was for Jeremy Soule's personal autograph. I assume from a marketing standpoint they realized that alone would probably double the sales that the OST would see otherwise. Eh, great music, great composer, great autograph (signed in gold, and the "S" is written like a treble clef...!) so I'm quite happy =)

The__GhosT
12-09-2011, 09:36 PM
To be fair, I would have still bought the soundtrack despite the price because as you said, it's worth it for four CDs with plenty of hours of music, a nice-looking case and the autograph. You can easily spend half that on one standard album in the shops. It would be a little cheaper for me (I'm from the UK so); around 20, so even less to complain about. Really, my criticism was down to the actual tracks themselves. Having listened to the whole thing now, much of it is samey (which is deliberate for the right reasons of course- it's a massive game with many scenes that require that type of church-like/fantasy ambience soundtrack, and it does fit the game very well) and there are a handful of tracks that I really like- as I said- mostly from the times the tracks have stood out to me while playing. I don't think it's a bad thing, as I said, they fit very well to the game and its atmosphere, but as stand-alone tracks, few stood out as bangers in their own right (can you call classical-style tracks "bangers"?, haha). The Soules are very talented though, and I heard that they composed it all digitally, which is impressive seeing as you would never think it was artificial when you listen to it. It sounds fully orchestrated.

Anyway, as said, I would definitely have bought it, I think the value for money is actually excellent considering the autograph and quantity of music, but it's just a few tracks that really made an impact on me really. Great music though. Anyway, I'll shut up now. On a side note, I think videogame soundtracks have always been the best and they're really coming into prominence as games become more like films nowadays.

Edit: The treble clef... haha, nice touch!

No need to shut up haha, it's great reading input from people with similar interests (for me anyways) :)

By the way, have you listened to the Guild Wars soundtracks? Jeremy Soule did those as well, and it is by far some of the best fantasy scoring I've ever heard, especially considering his work is mostly synth. You can listen to a very large portion of it here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELHkgOWOE9A).

Nah, I haven't. To be honest, I'm a console gamer (don't think Guild Wars came to Playstation?) and I rarely play RPGs. It's not that I don't like them, it's just I'm more into adventure\FPS games. But I'll play anything that's good. In terms of my RPG history, it started on SNES and obviously I was a fan of Zelda, then it moved to Pokemon on the gameboy (I don't care what anyone says, Red/Blue are still to this day one of the best games I've ever played) and only ever really appreciated FF7 and 9 on the PS1 (probably 9 because it shared a lot in common with 7 visually and gameplay-wise from what I remember and it didn't turn all pansy like 10 upwards seemed to do). Then, with the PS2 I really, really enjoyed Baldur's Gate 2 and Champions of Norrath. I've always been a co-op fan and it was great fun to add a personalised touch with the character customisation and to go through with a mate with your own crafted warrior! It was great fun going through as a magic-type character with my mate as a barbarian, we slaughtered it with that combo! Even Dead Island I consider a bit of an RPG, and I'm a sucker for free-roams so Dead Island on PS3 was a winner for me since it merged the best genres: first-person, RPG elements of character development, exploration, adventure, great combat and survival horror! Fantastic game! And now Skyrim has completely blown me away, I'm just ridiculously addicted; it's like your actually there! I get so involved and it also suits my preferences since it includes all the best genres. I think Japanese RPGs reached their peak a while ago and Westerns have dominated it for years now.

But I'll definitely give that soundtrack a listen to, cheers for the heads-up! Any soundtrack I love, I still listen to my favourite Amiga game soundtracks and SNES soundtracks too!
